Speaking Truth to Power: A Conversation with Lupe Gonzalo
Monday, September 23, 11am–noon | 739 Steger
The presentation will be delivered by Lupe Gonzalo, an indigenous Guatemalan woman and migrant farmworker of 12 years before getting involved in the fight for Fair Food. Since then, Lupe has become a prominent leader in a global human rights movement ensuring humane working and living standards for low-wage workers. She has been featured on CNN Freedom Project’s series on the Fair Food Program, was named a Community Trailblazer by the Equal Voice Magazine, and her story is featured in Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls, 100 Immigrant Women Who Changed the World. Most recently, she has been named by the Packer as one of the top “25 leaders, innovators and agents of change across the fresh produce supply chain.”
The Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) is a farmworker-led human rights organization that has been on the frontlines of combating abuses in U.S. agriculture, including forced labor and sexual assault for over 25 years. The presentation is part of their efforts to get people to come and see the Two Worlds Exhibit—a museum cataloging the history of exploitation within the agricultural industry and farmworker organizing for human rights.
The event will be in Spanish with English translation provided.
Co-sponsored with Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Sociology, UC Women's Center, Ethnic Programs and Services, and the Taft Research Center
